I know painting enhances the looks of my car, but what else does it do for my car?
Painting protects your car from developing rust. Once the metal develops rust it creeps underneath the paint film and eats away the metal. Thus it becomes necessary to paint the parts of a car that are prone to rust.

What properties can I expect from a good car paint?
Good car paint should offer excellent and long-lasting finish. It should have high gloss and should be easy to maintain. In short, the colour and gloss should not deteriorate and paint film should not crack.

What goes into a car paint?
Basically paint has many elements, but the elements which guide almost all properties are:
- Pigments : They give the paint its colour and protection against rust.
- Binders : They hold the pigments together and allow the paint to stick to the surface over which it is applied.

What paint should I choose for my car?
The paint needed for a car depends on the choice of shades available and its performance. Today's metallic and pearl finishes are difficult to reproduce in conventional NC finishes. Polyurethane paints offer excellent range of colours and their reproducibility is almost perfect. For repair jobs, you thus get the original look again. As regards performance they are the best paints available as they provide high gloss, high gloss retention, good UV resistance, good chemical and weather resistance and are easy to maintain (no effect of soap water washing).

Touch-up.....Scrapedown.... how do I know what kind of repainting my car actually needs?
The kind of painting your car needs depends entirely on the condition of the paint on the car.
- Rubbing and Polishing :
Most of the car paints become dull and fade a little after 8-12 months of usage. Here a simple rubbing and polishing will give back its glossy looks. It actually entails rubbing with special chemical compound and then polishing with a thin coat of wax. That gives the car its gloss back whereas in case of Polyurethane paints the original gloss is excellent and this does not fade, thus cutting on polishing jobs.
- Touch-up :
As the name suggests, a touch-up is undertaken when there are small dents or scratches or when a small area is to be repainted. Any scratch that exposes bare metal may lead to rust formation, showing blisters and rust. Look closely to ensure that the rust has not spread deeper. Normally a touch-up with conventional NC paints takes two to three days, whereas with the new generation Polyurethane finishes you can touch up a car in a day itself.
- Overcoat :
An overcoat is generally required after a couple of touch-ups, or if the paint has become dull, or if there are minor cracks or blisters on the surface. Here the entire car is to be coated after necessary surface preparation, but without removing the earlier coat of paint. In case the car is in bad shape you strip the car and remove all defects prior to painting, to eliminate the possibility of rust.
- Scrapedown :
After 2 - 3 overcoats or when there is excessive rust or extensive tin work is needed, total scrapedown painting is recommended. It means the body is scraped to the bare metal and a new coating right from primer to top coat is applied. Usually in conventional NC painting you require3-4 weeks, but with new technology (Polyurethane Paints) you get a scrap down job done in a week's time.

Is there something more about touch-ups that I should know?
In conventional NC finishes one needs to repaint a whole door for a small touch-up job, where as in Polyurethane paints (Deltron), a small scratch can be repaired because of the possibility of good shade match at a slightly higher price. This reduces the cost of the material used, the time taken and finally the customer is fully satisfied to receive an exact match, in a short time and a little higher price.

The painter said my car needs a Scrapedown, although just a small patch is to be repainted. Is there something wrong?
When there is a small scratch or a dent in the paint film, there are chances of rust formation underneath the paint film that may not be apparent. If on inspection of the car the painter finds corrosion in the areas often overlooked, a Scrapedown may be recommended.

The last time I got my car painted, I was disappointed that it did not look like the way it did when I first got it from the showroom. Was something wrong?
No. Nothing wrong with the type of paint used. With the old technology paints like alkyds and NC paints, the showroom gloss and colour matching cannot be achieved. Today with new generation Polyurethane paints, like Deltron, one can easily get a showroom finish. If painted with the recommended painting process, the finish could even be better than the showroom finish.
