Waterborne

Asian PPG introduces its VOC compliant Waterborne Basecoats - Aquabase Plus and Envirobase HP in India.

Legislations and regulations on VOC emission came into effect in Europe and the United States a few years ago. In Asia, Hong Kong and Korea have taken the initiative in implementing VOC regulations. Keeping in view the global trends, and to proactively contribute to a better environment, Asian PPG has introduced a complete range of VOC compliant refinish systems in India. These systems include High Solids Primers, Clear Coats and most importantly, Waterborne Basecoats.

VOC and its ill effects

Paint contains hydrocarbon solvents that contribute to Volatile Organic Compounds. VOC when emitted has harmful effects on human beings, and the environment in general.

VOC emissions from paint systems affect the respiratory and nervous systems, and may cause damage to various organs in the human body on prolonged exposure.

When released into the environment, VOC emissions react with Nitrogen Oxides in the atmosphere to cause acid rain, smog, destroy vegetation and increase global warming.

Solvent emissions from conventional refinish paint systems

Though pre-cleaners, primers and clear coats emit VOC, it is the basecoats that contribute to maximum emissions. This is mainly due to very high solvent or thinner content in ready-to-use basecoats. Hence solvent based basecoat is identified as a key area for VOC reduction.

Asian PPG’s Waterborne Basecoats

Asian PPG has introduced two brands in Waterborne Basecoats. While Envirobase HP is an extension to Deltron-GRS, the Aquabase Plus brand is extension of Nexa Autocolor 2K.

Both these brands are fully VOC compliant and have unique features that make them the ideal choice for a body shop converting to Waterborne.

The key benefits of Asian PPG’s waterborne systems are:

  • Simple to use, ensuring smooth transition
  • No stir tints that require mixing, thereby reducing energy costs and noise levels
  • Micro-Gel technology to ensure excellent stability of tints
  • Excellent storage stability over a wide range of
temperatures from 5 to 40 Degrees Celsius
  • When used as per recommendations, it will ensure productivity and quality
  • Results in better working environment and health of technicians

Approvals and current initiatives:

At present, waterborne systems by Asian PPG are approved in India by Mercedes Benz and Honda. We are working very closely with other motor manufacturers in this area.
